Heard that a stock “gave 300% in 3 years”? Pick the company, the two dates and the number. This page works out the return from split- and bonus-adjusted closing prices, then shows how much the choice of dates mattered by comparing the same span started on every other day. It checks arithmetic on past prices; it does not say what a stock will do.
Why the dates matter
A return figure always depends on two chosen days. The same stock can show a very large gain over one 3-year span and a small loss over another, so a single quoted figure says little unless you also know how common it is. The “other dates” chart above draws the same span from every start day, so you can see where the quoted figure falls.
