About ScripLens and how the figures are worked out
Last updated 27 October 2026
ScripLens is a free, non-commercial, personal educational project. It shows end-of-day data on every stock listed on the National Stock Exchange of India in a plain, descriptive form, and explains what each figure means, so that anyone can read a stock page, an annual result or an index without jargon.
ScripLens is a free, non-commercial site that provides market data and analytics for educational and informational purposes only. It is not investment advice, research, or a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any security. ScripLens is not registered with SEBI as an investment adviser or research analyst, and is not affiliated with NSE, BSE or SEBI. Prices are end-of-day and may be delayed or contain errors. Past performance does not indicate future results. Investments in the securities market are subject to market risks. Do your own research and consult a SEBI-registered investment adviser before investing.
Who runs it
- An individual, in their own time, as a learning and public-education project. Not a company, broker, adviser or research firm, and not registered with SEBI in any capacity.
- No advertising, subscriptions, paid features, donations, sponsorships, affiliate links or referrals. No company, broker or fund pays for anything on the site.
- No accounts and no sign-up. Watchlists and Learn progress stay in your browser (see the Privacy Policy).
Where the data comes from
- Prices: NSE's end-of-day bhavcopy files (open, high, low, close, volume and turnover for every traded stock).
- Indices: NSE Indices end-of-day closes and constituent lists.
- Results and balance sheets: companies' own quarterly and annual filings to the exchange (XBRL).
- Shareholding, corporate actions and board meetings: exchange filings (dividends, splits, bonuses, buybacks, results dates).
- Nothing is bought from data vendors, and there is no live or intraday data.
How often it updates
- Prices, ratios and summaries: every trading day in the evening, after NSE publishes the day's files (usually by 8–10 pm IST). Pages show the date their figures are "as of".
- Stock list and index membership: weekly. Results filings: as companies file, with a monthly catch-up.
- If data is more than a few days old, pages say so with a notice.
How the main figures are worked out
- Adjusted prices and returns: past prices are divided for splits and bonuses so a chart compares like with like. Returns are price changes only: dividends are not included unless a page says so.
- Compound annual growth (CAGR): the constant yearly rate that turns the starting price into the ending price over the period.
- Market capitalisation: closing price multiplied by the shares in issue from the latest filing, adjusted for any split or bonus since.
- P/E: closing price divided by earnings per share for the latest financial year on file (adjusted the same way). P/B, ROE, ROCE, margins and debt to equity come from the latest annual filing.
- Dividend yield: dividends per share that went ex in the past 12 months, divided by the closing price.
- Scores and checks: fixed, published rules applied to the figures above (for example "was revenue higher than a year earlier?"). They count how many checks a figure passes; they are not ratings or opinions.
- Sector medians: shown only when at least five companies in the sector have the figure on file.
- Every metric has an "explain" note on the stock page and a longer entry in the glossary.
What ScripLens deliberately does not do
- No buy, sell or hold calls, ratings, price targets, forecasts or "best stocks" lists.
- No colours that mean good or bad: highlights only show that one number is higher or lower than another.
- No tips channels, groups or social accounts. Anyone using the ScripLens name to offer tips is not us.
- No data downloads or exports.
Limits and corrections
- Filings can be late, revised or parsed incorrectly, and some companies have gaps (for example, no sector on file). A blank means the figure is not on file, not that it is zero.
- Always check important figures against the company's filings on nseindia.com.
- Spotted an error? Write to [email protected] with the page and figure, and it will be checked and corrected.
