P/E in context

In one lineA P/E is only comparable with other P/Es from the same kind of business. Sectors differ, so look within one sector first.

The P/E ratio is the market cap divided by the latest annual net profit. Companies with a loss have no meaningful P/E, so the page leaves it blank. Below, the median for each sector is set against the others, and each company's own P/E is shown with its sector median.

P/E by sector

The typical P/E differs from one sector to another

Compare P/E within a sector, not across sectors. Each bar is the median P/E of the companies in that sector on file, with the number of companies. Sectors with fewer than five companies are not shown.

Questions to ask of any figure

In one lineFive questions turn any number on the page into a reading. None of them points to a conclusion.
  1. What period does it cover? A quarter, a financial year, the last 12 months, or one day.
  2. As of when? Stock page figures are labelled with the date of their end-of-day data.
  3. Compared with what? Its own history, its sector median, or the index. Check which one the page uses.
  4. How many companies or observations sit behind it? A median from five companies is not the same as one from 80.
  5. What does it leave out? Dividends in a price return, adjustments in a raw price, or a one-off item in a profit.
