How it is worked out

Each month 12% of basic pay plus dearness allowance goes in from you, plus any voluntary PF (VPF). The employer also pays 12%, but 8.33% of wages up to ₹15,000, that is up to ₹1,250 a month, goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme. The rest of the employer's share goes to your EPF.

Interest is worked out monthly on the running balance at the declared yearly rate ÷ 12 and credited once a year. The rate is declared every year; the default here is the latest one used. Interest on your own contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year is taxable.
